The Vagus Nerve & Your Health

At APT, we believe that it is essential for our patients to have a holistic understanding of their bodies and how various systems interact to promote overall health and wellness. That's why I highly recommend the following article by Dr. Arielle Schwartz's on the vagus nerve and its connection to our health.

The vagus nerve is a complex nerve that plays a vital role in regulating our stress response, digestive system, heart rate, and much more. For example, did you know that activation of the vagus nerve keeps your immune system in check and releases an assortment of hormones and neurotransmitters such as acetylcholine and oxytocin? This results in reductions in inflammation, reduced allergies, relief from tension headaches, improvements in memory, and feelings of relaxation (Groves & Brown, 2005).

Dr. Schwartz's article is an excellent resource for understanding the vagus nerve's functions and the techniques that can be used to stimulate it, such as deep breathing and meditation.
